Rant: Yes, I feel bad for Tom Cruise

I hope everyone had a very happy and safe Independence Day.  I spent mine with the fam soaking up some rays at the pool and ending the day with a nice firework show.

I really had no idea as to what to blog about today.  I’ve been reading a lot of the media hype surrounding the surprise divorce between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and it seemed like a relevant topic especially because I have my own opinions about it.  Bash me if you may, but I am feeling very sad for Mr. Tom Cruise right now.

Putting aside his religious choice or the fact that he is one of the most famous actors in Hollywood; he is still human and what Katie did to him has to hurt like hell.  There was an article that came out in People magazine about a week or two before Katie anonymously filed for divorce in New York City in which all he could do was express his love for her, and Suri and state how happy he is to be with them.  Was it all fake or a cover up for underlying pain?  Maybe, but I don’t think so.  I think they were truly the words of a man who loves being a husband and a father who had no idea what he was about to endure.

Happier Times

I think what makes it heinous is the fact that Katie had been planning this for a very long time behind Tom’s back.  Sources say that she and her father had rounded up attorneys, changed out her cell phones and moved belongings into her new NYC apartment.  I found it interesting that she is blaming her reason for this on Tom’s preference for Scientology.  C’mon Katie the whole world knows that Tom is a practicing and very faithful Scientologist….didn’t you know this when you married him?  Did you think he was going to want your kid raised Catholic?  Really?  Can you say that in the 7 years you were together, this subject never came up?  Unbelievable and incredibly stupid.

I think what Katie did was horrible, mean and downright nasty.  I think she married her “crush” and now it was becoming all too real.  No more fairytale and she panicked.  Instead of talking to her husband about her concerns or attempting to work things out, she cowards out and has divorce papers presented to him while he is out of the country!  Of course all we know about Ton Cruise is what we see on TV and read in the papers however he has made no secret about how much he loves Katie and Suri.  From what is out there, they were his whole world.

If it is true what they say about Karma, then Katie is in for it for sure.

  1. I have to say I COMPLETELY agree with you…it doesn’t hurt that I happen to have a crush of my own on Tom, ever since he flashed that crooked smile in Top Gun, I haven’t been able to think of him other than good ol’ Maverick. I’m always so sad when Hollywood celebrities split. Maybe because we follow their lives so closely or maybe it’s because these people have a little girl who is in the middle of this. Great post…sigh…poor Tom…

    • I know what you mean. Top Gun was the first movie I saw him in too — at the time my older brother was going through flight school in the Air Force and it didn’t hurt that TC looke a bit like him and is the same age. I’ve grown up watching his movies and think he really is a great actor. Even though he is a mega-star, he still is a regular person and I can’t imagine what he is feeling right now. I’m interested to see how this plays out but I have no doubt that he will continue to act like the gentleman he is and do whatever is in the best interests of Suri.

  2. I think you’re right that she should have thought about their religious differences before she married him and not wait till they have a family and then ‘ambush’ him with the divorce. I may not agree with his beliefs but they don’t entitle his wife to treat him the way she did….Diane

I was so gratified to come upon your blog and blog post today. Thanks for writing it. I found your post after reading the umpteenth article about “smart Katie”, “brave Katie”, and “incredible mom Katie”…”protecting her child like a momma bear”…All of this, and everything else that’s being written, a thinly veiled assumption and indictment of Tom C. as a dangerous, victimizing, and unpredictable perpetrator.

Is he? Is he really? Is he so controlled himself that he is helpless in the face of this “frightening” organization? Or is he “one of them”…and so, run, Katie, run?

I am no fan of what I read about Scientology, and I can even appreciate that the intensity I have seen in Tom C. could translate into an overbearing husband. I can imagine he and all that surrounds his celebrity and involvement in Scientology could lead to feeling controlled or oppressed and that this could not be fully seen or understood at the beginning of a passionate relationship.

But was this flamboyant demonstration by Katie and her family, and all of its predictable inferences, truly necessary to the safety and well-being of Katie and Suri? Either Katie and her family honestly believe so, want us to believe so, or both.

In any case, it would be nice to see just a hint of compassion from her for the impact of her actions. It would be nice to see anyone in the media willing to feel sadness for a man’s stunned loss.

Maybe we haven’t heard the last of this, confidentiality agreement or no. Maybe Katie does have compassion and something to say and will do so down the road. For now, I’ve had just about all I can stand of “wonderful mom” Katie running around New York.

    • I couldn’t agree more. “A man’s stunned loss” describes it perfectly. I believe that if Tom Cruise was not under so much scrutiny for his religious beliefs, media coverage wouldn’t be so one-sided. But, the public loves a controversy so there you go.
